Wellington, Kansas

Wellington is a city in Sumner County, Kansas, United States. It is also the county seat.[5] In 2020, 7,715 people lived there.[4]

History

19th century

The first post office in Wellington was created in July 1871.[6]

Geography

Wellington is at 37°16′2″N 97°24′0″W (37.267289, -97.400061).[7] at an elevation of 1230 feet.[8] The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 8.50 square miles (22.01 km2). Of that, 7.61 square miles (19.71 km2) is land and 0.89 square miles (2.31 km2) is water.[2]

Climate

Wellington has hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The Köppen Climate Classification system says that Wellington has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[9]

2020 census

The 2020 census says that there were 7,715 people, 3,170 households, and 1,903 families living in Wellington. Of the households, 61.0% owned their home and 39.0% rented their home.

The median age was 38.8 years. Of the people, 85.9% were White, 1.8% were Black, 1.3% were Native American, 0.6% were Asian, 2.6% were from some other race, and 7.9% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.9% of the people.[3][11]

2010 census

The 2010 United States Census says that there were 8,172 people, 3,246 households, and 2,105 families living in Wellington.[12]
