Belleville, Kansas

Belleville is a city in Republic County, Kansas, United States. It is also the county seat of Republic County. In 2020, 2,007 people lived there.[3]

History

Belleville was created in 1869. It incorporated as a city in 1878.[4] It was named for Arabelle Tutton, the wife of a member of the town company.[5]

The first post office in Belleville was created in February 1870.[6]

Geography

Belleville is at 39°49′28″N 97°38′2″W (39.824337, -97.633855). The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 2.09 square miles (5.41 km2). Of that, 2.06 square miles (5.34 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.[2]

2020 census

The 2020 census says that there were 2,007 people, 919 households, and 490 families living in Belleville. Of the households, 68.9% owned their home and 31.1% rented their home.

The median age was 46.8 years. Of the people, 93.7% were White, 0.5% were Native American, 0.5% were Asian, 0.2% were Black, 0.2% were Pacific Islanders, 0.3% were from some other race, and 4.5% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.6% of the people.[3][7]

2010 census

The 2010 census says that there were 1,991 people, 949 households, and 533 families living in Belleville.[8]

Media

The Belleville Telescope is the local newspaper. It was created in 1870. It has been publishing regularly since 1873.[9]
