  1. 5세기 중엽부터 내몽골의 시라무렌강(Shira Müren江) 유역에 나타나 살던 유목 민족. 몽골계와 퉁구스계의 혼혈종으로, 10세기 초 야율아보기가 여러 부족을 통일하여 요나라를 건국한 후 발해를 멸망시키고 고려에도 세 차례나 쳐들어왔으나, 12세기 초 금나라의 성장으로 말미암아 세력이 약화되어 다시 부족 상태로 분열하였다.
