Glyph origin

Etymology

Unclear. Schuessler (2007) lists several proposals:

  • related to Tibetan ཆབ (chab, water) (Coblin, 1986)), yet initial velars do not palatize in Written Tibetan;
  • related to Jingpho [script needed] (məgyep, liquor);
  • related to Burmese ချိပ် (hkyip, lac), Proto-Loloish *C-gripᴸ (lac; pine) (Peiros & Starostin, 1996, STEDT), if so from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-kryap (bug, ant, cochineal, lac insect) (whence also (OC *raːb) "wax");

Likely related to (OC *kʰrɯb) & (OC *ɦleːb) ( (OC *kjub)'s dialectal synonym attested east of Tong Pass); yet not to (OC *l̥ʰjɯmʔ) (Schuessler, 2007).
