The population was around 115,000 during 2020.[4] It is the county seat of New Hanover County.[6] It was named in honor of Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington, who was Prime Minister at the same time as George II was King of England.

It was the site of the 1898 insurrection where many white people killed African-American politicians in the city.[7] It is seen as the only coup d'état on American soil.[7]
