From Proto-Hellenic *ékeyenos, from ἐ- (e-, augment) (from Proto-Indo-European *h₁é) + *ḱe (deictic particle) + Proto-Indo-European *h₁enos (that) (compare ἔνη (énē)). Middle part also in Latin ce-dō, cis, hi-c(e), last part also in Latin enim, nam, etc. Possibly a cognate with Old Norse hann (from Proto-Norse *ᚺᚨᚾᚨᛉ (*hanaʀ /⁠*hānaʀ⁠/)).
