호랭이
Korean
Etymology
/i/ umlaut form of 호랑이 (horang'i).
Noun
호랭이 • (horaeng'i)
- (Gangwon, Seoul, Gyeongsang, Jeolla dialect, Chungcheong) Dialectal form of 호랑이 (horang'i, “tiger”)
Usage notes
The Standard South Korean term for tiger is 호랑이 (horang'i). In many regional dialects, however, the animal is known as 호랭이 (horaeng'i), a phonological change due to a process of I-mutation, similar to the change between 가자미 (gajami, “flounder”) and 가재미 (gajaemi), or 지팡이 (jipang'i, “stick”) and 지팽이 (jipaeng'i).
