Etymology 1
From reconstructed Middle Korean *볻 (*pwot), with suffix 이 (-i, noun suffix).[1] See Yukjin dialect 보대 (bodae, “vulva”), which was a dialect that did not undergo palatalization of /t/. Cognate with Jeju 보뎅이 (bodeng'i, “vulva”) and probably also Japanese 陰 (hoto, “id.”), historically from Old Japanese *potə. Compare also 불 (bul, “genitalia”), surviving in fossilized form in words such as 불알 (bural, “testicle”).
Usage notes
- Very vulgar, but not as offensive as 씹 (ssip).
Etymology 2
Sino-Korean word from 保持, from 保 (“to protect”) + 持 (“to sustain”).
Derived terms
- 보지(保持)되다 (bojidoeda, “to be preserved”)
- 보지(保持)하다 (bojihada, “to preserve”)
Etymology 3
Sino-Korean word from 報知, from 報 (“to report”) + 知 (“to know”).
Derived terms
- 보지(報知)하다 (bojihada, “to inform”)
