Examples

After a trial, A is found guilty of one count of aggravated theft, one count of dangerous driving and one count of obstruction of a public official.

If the maximum terms of imprisonment for these crimes are respectively 10 years (with a 2-year minimum imprisonment), 8 years and 5 years, then the court may sentence him to any period between 2 years and 23 years (10+8+5=23 years).

This is however subject to the overall maximum period for imprisonment. If the criminal law states that imprisonment cannot exceed 20 years, then A can only be sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment at maximum.
