Etymology
Plausibly from either:
- Spanish paga (“payment; to pay”), from Spanish pagar (“to pay”), which was frequently used as the main definition in 1½ of the pages for the Hokkien term for "to pay", attested and translated in Spanish in the Dictionario Hispanico Sinicum (1626-1642).[1] The Chinese community of the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era used to speak a sort of Spanish pidgin variety known as "Caló Chino Español" and "La Lengua del Parian" (in Spanish) or "Kastilang tindahan" (in Tagalog).[2][3]
- Tagalog pala (“recompense; consequence; payment taken from someone”), attested in the Vocabulario de la lengua tagala (1860),[4] although the glottal stop at the end IPA: /pɐˈlaʔ/ denotes it as less likely.
