Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀕 (sattaga), from Sanskrit सप्तक (saptaka, group of seven), but influenced by Northwestern Indo-Aryan, whence also Punjabi ਸੱਤਾ (sattā). Doublet of सप्तक (saptak). Equivalent to सात (sāt, 7) + -आ (). Cognate with Nepali सत्ता (sattā).
