Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀕 (aṭṭhaga), from Sanskrit अष्टक (áṣṭaka), but influenced by Northwestern Indo-Aryan, whence also Punjabi ਅੱਠਾ (aṭṭhā). Doublet of अष्टक (aṣṭak). Equivalent to आठ (āṭh) + -आ (). Cognate with Nepali अट्ठा (aṭṭhā).
