Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan, whence also Punjabi ਪੰਜਾ (pañjā), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀁𑀘𑀕 (paṃcaga), from Sanskrit पञ्चक (pañcaka, “set of 5”). Cognate with Nepali पन्जा (panjā).
