Inherited from Old Hindi पांनी (pā̃nī), from Sauraseni Apabhramsa पाणिउ (pāṇiu), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀡𑀻𑀅 (pāṇīa), from Sanskrit पानीय (pānīya, “water, drink”). Doublet of पानीय (pānīya).
