Etymology

From the mediaeval Byzantine Greek ἀποκόβω (apokóbō), from Ancient Greek ἀποκόπτω (apokóptō) with metaplasm in the pattern of κόπτω (kóptō) > κόβω (kóvo, “cut”). Analysable as απο- (“from”) +‎ κόβω (“cut”).[1]
