Ōsumi Province

Ōsumi Province (大隅国, Ōsumi no Kuni) was an old province of Japan in the area of Kagoshima Prefecture on the island of Kyūshū.[1] It was sometimes called Gūshū (隅州).

Ōsumi had borders with Hyūga and Satsuma Provinces.

The ancient capital city of the province was near Kokubu.

History

In 713 (Wadō 6, 3rd month), the land of Ōsumi Province was separated from Hyūga.[2]

In the Meiji period, the provinces of Japan were converted into prefectures. Maps of Japan and Ōsumi Province were reformed in the 1870s.[3]

Japan's first satellite was named Ōsumi. It was launched February 11, 1970.[4]

Shrines and Temples

Kagoshima jinja was the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) of Ōsumi. [5]
