Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₃ri-né-H-ti, from the root *h₃reyH-. Cognate with Sanskrit रिणाति (riṇā́ti, “to make flow, to release”), Ancient Greek ὀρῑ́νω (orī́nō, “to set in motion, to stimulate, to irritate”) (Lesbian dialect ὀρίννω (orínnō)), Proto-Germanic *rinnaną (“to run”). Further related to Latin rīvus (“stream”), irrītō (“to irritate”), Old Irish rían (“sea”), riathor (“waterfall”), Old English rīð (“stream”).
