Action/resultant noun of *kuditi (“to prosecute, to accuse”) + *-a, commonly prefixed with *pro-.

On its own, possibly attested in Bulgarian ку́да (kúda, “fellowship, group, flock”), presumably reanalyzed from original meaning “gang, mob” < “someone prosecuted, driven”. Alternative interpretations, however, do exist. See there for further details.
