Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *sapátniH (whence Sanskrit सपत्नी (sapatnī, “co-wife”)), from *sa- (“together, co-”) + *pátniH (“wife”), from Proto-Indo-European *pótnih₂ (“wife”). Cognate with Ancient Greek πότνια (pótnia, “mistress, lady”).
