From Proto-Indo-Iranian *sapátniH (whence Sanskrit सपत्नी (sapatnī, co-wife)), from *sa- (together, co-) + *pátniH (wife), from Proto-Indo-European *pótnih₂ (wife). Cognate with Ancient Greek πότνια (pótnia, mistress, lady).
