Etymology

正格 (regular) + 活用 (inflection)

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [se̞ːka̠kɯ̟̊ᵝ ka̠t͡sɨᵝjo̞ː]

Noun

(せい)(かく)(かつ)(よう) • (seikaku katsuyō) せいかくくゎつよう (seikaku kwatuyou)?

  1. a Japanese verbal inflection that is considered regular
    Antonym: 変格活用
Hyponyms: 上一段活用, 上二段活用, 五段活用, 下一段活用, 下二段活用, 四段活用

Usage notes

  • Regularity is mostly noted as to whether the six 活用形 (katsuyōkei, inflectional forms) of verbs deviate too much from an expected pattern or not. Even among the so-called "regular" verbs, there are still slight irregularities. See 下さる (kudasaru), 行く (iku) and 問う (tou) which have such irregularities.
