Etymology
《南村輟耕錄》 explains the origin of the term as follows:
[Classical Chinese, trad.]
- Ruò yuē rénshēn zhī zhōngbàn, zé dāng zài qí fù jiān. Gài zì cǐ ér shàng, yǎn ěr bí jiē shuāng qiào; zì cǐ ér xià, kǒu jì èrbiàn jiē dān qiào. Sān huà yīn, sān huà yáng, chéng tài guà yě. [Pinyin]
- If one refers to the middle of the body, it must be around the navel and the abdomen. For going up from here [the philtrum], the eyes, ears, and nose all have two orifices; going down from here, the mouth and the two [organs of] excretion all have single orifices. Three strokes of yin and three strokes of yang make the Peace hexagram.
[Classical Chinese, simp.]
