Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mā́ras, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mā́ras, from Proto-Indo-European *mór-os, from *mer- (“to die”). Cognate with English mare (whence nightmare), German Mahr, Lithuanian mãras, Polish mora, Serbo-Croatian мо̏ра.
