Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀉𑀯𑀯𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀞 (uvaviṭṭha, past participle of 𑀉𑀯𑀯𑀺𑀲𑀤𑀺 (uvavisadi)) + -ना (-nā) with the aphaeresis of /u/,[1] from Sanskrit उपविशति (upaviśati, to sit; to approach).[2] Compare Punjabi ਬੈਠਣਾ (baiṭhṇā), Nepali बस्नु (basnu), Gujarati બેસવું (besvũ), Marathi बसणे (basṇe), Bengali বসা (bośa), Assamese বহা (boha).
