Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘎𑘨𑘜𑘹 (karaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀓𑀭𑁂𑀇 (karei), from Sanskrit करोति (karóti), a corruption from Vedic Sanskrit कृणोति (kṛṇóti). Cognate with Konkani कर्चे (karce), Gujarati કરવું (karvũ), Hindi करना (karnā), Punjabi ਕਰਨਾ (karnā) / کرنا (krnā), Bengali করা (kora).
