Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑀁𑀧𑀇 (kaṃpaï), from Sanskrit कम्पते (kampate). Cognates include Gujarati કંપવું (kampvũ), Rajasthani कांपणौ (kā̃mpṇau), Assamese কঁপা (kõpa), Bengali কাঁপা (kãpa).
