Inherited from Proto-Turkic *boguŕ (“throat”); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰉𐰆𐰍𐰔 (boɣuz), Azerbaijani boğaz, Bashkir боғаҙ (boğaź), Chuvash пыр (pyr), Kyrgyz богуз (boguz), Turkmen bogaz, Uyghur بوغۇز (boghuz) and Uzbek boʼgʼiz.
