Inherited from Proto-Slavic *torpiti. Vasmer adduces Ancient Greek τρέπω (trépō, to turn) (from the Proto-Indo-European *terkʷ-), and possibly Ancient Greek τέρπω (térpō) (Proto-Indo-European *terp-).
