From Ancient Greek φεύγω (pheúgō, “flee”) (the sense "leave" since mediaeval times. From Proto-Hellenic *pʰéugō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewg-. Has been displaced by δραπετεύω (drapetévo) in the Ancient Greek sense of "to flee".
