Etymology

παρα- (para-, expressing excessive) + κοιμάμαι (koimámai, sleep). Of different sense are the Mediaeval παρακοιμοῦμαι (parakoimoûmai, sleep too little) and the Hellenistic παρακοιμῶμαι (parakoimômai, lie or keep watch beside), contracted form of παρακοιμάομαι (parakoimáomai), whose participle παρακοιμώμενος (parakoimṓmenos) was in use as an official's title in the Byzantine Empire.
