Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἀνταμείβω (antameíbō), from the mediopassive verb of Ancient Greek ἀνταμείβομαι (antameíbomai, give back in exchange). Morphologically, from αντ- (αντι-) (ant- (anti-), counter) + αμείβω (ameívo, pay, compensate).
