From Old French eschiu (“shy, timid”) (cf. eschiver), from Frankish *skeuh (“shy, timid, fearful”), from Proto-Germanic *skeuhaz (“shy, frightened”). Cognate with Old English sċēoh (“shy”), Dutch schuw (“shy”), Danish sky (“shy”), Sicilian schifìu (“disgust, mess”). More at shy, eschew.
