Borrowed from Tagalog hopia, from Spanish hopia, from Hokkien, possibly 好餅／好饼 (hó piáⁿ, literally “good pastry”) according to Chan-Yap (1980) and Manuel (1948), which was possibly an old genericized trademark by a particular Chinese deli company.
