hopia
See also: Hopia
English
Etymology
Borrowed from Tagalog hopia, from Spanish hopia, from Hokkien, possibly 好餅/好饼 (hó piáⁿ, literally “good pastry”) according to Chan-Yap (1980) and Manuel (1948), which was possibly an old genericized trademark by a particular Chinese deli company. Compare Cebuano hopya, Early Manila Hokkien 香餅/香饼 (hioⁿ-piáⁿ, “fragrant pastry”), Hokkien 癖 (phiah, “craving”), Hokkien 好癖 (hó-phiah, “good temper”), English lumpia.
