From Proto-Albanian *garẟ-,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *gʰórdʰos, from *gʰerdʰ- (“to enclose, to encircle”) (compare English yard or garden, Latin hortus, Lithuanian gar̃das).[2] A potential loanword from Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃 (gards) is also supported. [3]
