Etymology
From Proto-Ugric *paĺɜ (“icecrust, frost; to freeze”). Cognates include Northern Mansi по̄люӈкве (pōlûňkwe, “to freeze”). For earlier proposed cognates such as Finnish palaa (“to burn”),[1] see fal (“to devour”).
