From Old Swedish damb, dåm (“dust, steam”). Akin to Low German damp, Dutch damp, and Danish damp (“vapor, steam, fog”), German Dampf, Icelandic dampi, English damp (“moderately wet”), and to German dampf imperative of dimpfen (“to smoke”). Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *dampaz.
