Inherited from Ottoman Turkish آیق[1] or آییق (ayıḳ),[2] from Proto-Turkic *aduk, from *ad- (to sober up),[3] with *-uk (participle suffix),[4] equivalent to ay- (to sober up) + -ık (participle suffix).
