Borrowed from Early Modern Spanish ángeles (“angels”), plural of ángel, from Late Latin angelus, from Ancient Greek ἄγγελος (ángelos). In Early Modern Spanish, Spanish ⟨g⟩ (before ⟨e⟩ or ⟨i⟩) was pronounced /ʃ/; /ʃ/ became /s/ as common with other early borrowings (compare sabon, singkamas, sugal, sugarol, saro, and tasa). Doublet of anghel.
