Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish آج قارننه (ac ḳarnına),[1][2] from آج (ac, aç) and قارن (ḳarn, ḳarın),[3][4] equivalent to (hungry) + karın (stomach) + (possessive suffix) + -(n)a (dative suffix with "n" as buffer consonant), literally on/with hungry stomach. Cognates with Azerbaijani acqarına, Bashkir ас ҡарынға (as qarınğa), Kazakh ашқарынға (aşqarynğa), Kyrgyz ач карынга (ac karınga), Tatar ач карынга (aç qarınga), Uzbek och qoringa.
