Varssel
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as verslo in 1341. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a compound of Middle Dutch verse (“young cow”) or varre (“young bull”) and lo (“light forest on sandy soil”). An alternative etymology interprets the toponym as a compound of Proto-Germanic *fursi- (“gorse, Ulex europaeus”) or Middle Dutch versc (“fresh, potable”) and reads lo (“pool, puddle”). Compare Peursum, Poederoijen, Poeijers, Sterksel, Vaarle, Vaarsel, Varsen, Varsselder, Varsseveld, Ten Vorsel and Bolsele.
