Varssel

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as verslo in 1341. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a compound of Middle Dutch verse (young cow) or varre (young bull) and lo (light forest on sandy soil). An alternative etymology interprets the toponym as a compound of Proto-Germanic *fursi- (gorse, Ulex europaeus) or Middle Dutch versc (fresh, potable) and reads lo (pool, puddle). Compare Peursum, Poederoijen, Poeijers, Sterksel, Vaarle, Vaarsel, Varsen, Varsselder, Varsseveld, Ten Vorsel and Bolsele.
