First attested as sterkesele and sterxele in 1196-1198. Compound of either sterk (strong, powerful) or sterke (young cow) and Old Dutch sele (hall home). Compare Peursum, Poederoijen, Poeijers, Vaarle, Vaarsel, Varsen, Varssel, Varsselder, Varsseveld, Ten Vorsel and Bolsele.
