First attested as versen, versene and versne in 1381-1383. Etymology unknown. Perhaps derived from (a term cognate to) Middle Dutch verse (“young cow”) or from an ancient hydronym. Compare Peursum, Poederoijen, Poeijers, Sterksel, Vaarle, Vaarsel, Varssel, Varsselder, Varsseveld, Ten Vorsel, Bolsele, Versen and Viersen.
