Etymology

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *terp- (to tremble, to quiver) + *-ъkъ, cognate with Lithuanian tirpùs (soluble, fusible). Martynov tentively considers a reanalysis of an earlier *kьrpъkъ in order to match it with Lithuanian kir̃pti (to trim, to cut).
