Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Usually compared with Latin cavus (“hollow”), Sanskrit शून्य (śūnya, “empty, baren”), Ancient Greek κοῖλος (koîlos, “hollow”), Old Armenian սոր (sor, “hole”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱewH- (“to get hollow”). May be further related to Proto-Slavic *sovati (“to shove”) (of undetermined origin).
Sometimes, also compared with Lithuanian sáuja (“handful”), Latvian saũja (“handful”).
