From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śauˀ-. Cognate with Lithuanian šáuti (to shoot, to shove) (1sg. šáuju, šóviau), Latvian šaũt (to shoot, to shove) (1sg. šaũju, šaũnu, šãvu), East Latvian dialectal saũt (to shoot, to shove).
