Etymology

Related to Proto-Slavic *strьžę̃ ~ *strь̏žьnь (“core, nucleus”). Possibly cognate with Swedish streke (“cental flux”), from Proto-Germanic *strikiz (“streak, line”).

Compare also Slovene stȍrž, stȑž (“cone, pillar”), seeminly from an yo-stem *strъžь.
