From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śálˀmāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱólh₂meh₂. Cognate with Latvian sal̃ms, Old Prussian salme, Ancient Greek κάλαμος (kálamos), Latin culmus, Proto-Germanic *halmaz.
