Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Commonly compared with Lithuanian kúokštas (“bundle, tuft”), accepted with reservations by Trubačev.
The lack of descendants in other branches formally permits alternative reconstruction *kǫstъ, considered as an option in ESSJa. Compare Proto-Slavic *kǫťa (“shack, shed”) > Russian ку́ча (kúča, “hut”), ку́ща (kúšča, “thicket”) (the later via Church Slavonic).
