From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kor-, from *(s)ker- (to cut) + *-yto, compare Lithuanian prãkartas (manger, trough), Old Prussian pracartis (trough), from the root *(s)kort- an extension of *(s)kor-, and *kopyto with the same suffix.
