Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Either from *korva (cow) + *-jь or less likely from Pre-Slavic *korvъ (curved) + *-ajь, effectively cognate with Latin curvus. The lemma is found mainly throughout East and South Slavic. West Slavic only employs the synonym Proto-Slavic *kolačь.

The etymology from *korva is based on the assumption that kravais are given to the bride during wedding as a symbol of fertility (associated with cows).

Noun

*korvajь m

  1. ritual bread (usually circular)
    Synonyms: *kolačь, *pogača
  2. loaf
