Etymology

Probably from an earlier substantivized adjective[1] cognate with Lithuanian draĩkas (“slender, erect”), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *draikas. According to Skok, possibly related to Proto-Slavic *drьkolь (“stick”). Further etymology is uncertain.
